Overview

Vinayak Kumar, MD, MBA is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and a multimodality cardiovascular imager in the Division of Cardiology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

Dr. Kumar did his preclinical training in the University of Pennsylvania (B.S. in Biochemistry, M.S. in Chemistry, M.D., and M.B.A. from the Wharton School). He then completed his Internal Medicine Residency and Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. During this time, he also served as Chief Fellow of the General Cardiology Fellowship. He then completed an Advanced Multimodality Cardiovascular Imaging fellowship at Mayo Clinic. He is trained in echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, cardiac MRI, and cardiac CT.

His clinical interests are in valvular heart disease and cardiomyopathies. He has a strong interest in medical education and has previously partnered with a digital stethoscope company to create a physical exam curriculum. His non-clinical interests are in leadership and entrepreneurship, as he had previously co-founded a telehealth company to better assist international patients with cancer. His research interests focus on 1) the economics and outcomes of valvular interventions, and 2) investigation of cardiac physiology using multimodality approaches to better prognosticate outcomes in different cardiomyopathies. He was awarded the Outstanding Clinical Achievement award at Mayo Clinic in 2024.
