Ziad C. Sifri, MD, FACS, is the Wesley J. Howe Professor of Surgery, and Division Chief of Trauma.
Dr. Sifri completed his medical degree at McGill University in Canada. He then went on to complete his residency in General Surgery at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Following his residency, Dr. Sifri went on to complete his fellowship in Trauma and Critical Care at the New Jersey Medical School and is now the Program Director of the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship. Under his leadership, the Acute Care Surgery Fellowship was established in 2022.
Dr. Sifri is Director of the Trauma Clerkship and a recipient of the NJMS Excellence in Teaching Award. He is a seven-time recipient, and a twenty-four time nominee of the Golden Apple Teaching Award. He is a recipient of the Emerging Leader Award from the American College of Academic International Medicine. In 2025, he was a proud recipient of the ACS/Pfizer Surgical Volunteerism and Humanitarian Award for his diligent work and tireless sacrifice providing care to the underserved population abroad. Dr. Sifri serves on the Association of Academic Global Surgery Advisory Board and the American College of Academic International Medicine Board of Governors.
He is the Director of the Office of Global Health and Center for Global Surgery at NJMS. In 2009, he co-founded and President of the International Surgical Health Initiative (ISHI), a 501c3 non-profit humanitarian organization that provides free surgical care to underserved communities internationally through surgeons and other health care professionals. ISHI is has led over 40 surgical missions resulting in over 3000 cost-free surgeries in Haiti, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Peru, Guatemala, and the Philippines.
Dr. Sifri has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications, more than 80 published abstracts and has co-authored 9 book chapters related to acute care surgery and presented on regional, national, and international levels.
