Dr. Patel joined the Department of Medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in July 2007 as an Academic Hospitalist, back when the institution was still part of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the same institution from 2004 to 2007, following his medical degree from the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Trinidad and Tobago.
Starting as a junior hospitalist in a small team of three, Dr. Patel has been instrumental in the growth and development of the Hospital Medicine Division, which now includes 20 hospitalists. He currently serves as the Division Director of Hospital Medicine, where he leads initiatives in patient care, quality improvement, patient safety, and hospitalist well-being.
In addition, Dr. Patel is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He also holds the role of Director of Inpatient Medicine, working closely with hospital administration and managing the scheduling of Medicine Attendings for the Internal Medicine Residency Program's teaching teams.
A Senior Fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine, Dr. Patel remains actively engaged in advancing the field and staying current with developments in Hospital Medicine.
