Esther A. Nimchinsky, MD, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Radiology at Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School and Chief of the Division of Neuroradiology at University Hospital, Newark. Dr. Nimchinsky earned her MD degree and her PhD in neuroscience from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and a basic science faculty position in Neuroscience at Rutgers, Newark, she returned to clinical medicine, completing an internship in Internal Medicine at UMDNJ, and a residency in Diagnostic Radiology and a fellowship in Neuroradiology at the Mount Sinai Hospital. After practicing as a neuroradiologist in a busy private practice in central New Jersey, she joined the Department of Radiology at Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School and University Hospital, Newark.
Dr. Nimchinsky specializes in imaging of the brain, spine, head and neck, and performs image-guided procedures such as lumbar punctures, myelograms and biopsies. She has a particular interest in modifying and optimizing imaging protocols on an ongoing basis to incorporate the latest innovations in imaging and derive the most information possible from each study.
Her research interests include neurovascular and stroke imaging, trauma imaging, and abnormalities and diseases of the temporal bones. She has multiple ongoing active research programs, is involved in several large clinical trials and works on multidisciplinary panels to improve patient care.
In addition to her clinical and research activities, she is actively involved in teaching residents and medical students, is a member of numerous radiologic societies, and served on the Education committee of the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology.
