Flavio Paterno, MD, MPH, FACS is Associate Professor of Surgery at Rutgers New Jersey Medical
School.
He completed his General Surgery Residency at Yale University (New Haven, CT), and his Transplant
Surgery Fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center (Dallas, TX). He also completed a Master of
Public Health at University of Cincinnati (OH).
Dr. Paterno is certified by the American Board Surgery and the American Society of Transplant
Surgeons, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Paterno's areas of expertise include liver surgery, gallbladder and bile duct surgery, pancreas
surgery, hernia surgery, mini-invasive and laparoscopic surgery, surgery of adrenal gland, spleen,
portal hypertension, oncologic surgery, liver transplant, and kidney transplant.
He has provided a significant contribution in innovation and research including the development of a new
surgical procedure for the treatment of large for size syndrome in liver transplantation (marginal
costotomy) and the application of the robotic technology in hepatobiliary surgery.
Dr. Paterno is a very compassionate surgeon and distinguishes himself for his attention and
dedication to his patients. He strongly believes in multidisciplinary care based on a close collaboration
with all physicians, specialists, and primary care physicians involved in the care of each patient. He is
committed to excellence in clinical service, research, and education. He published several peer-
reviewed articles, book chapters, & multiple abstracts presented at major national surgery meetings.
