I am an Associate Professor and the Medical Director of the Department of Pediatrics - Division of
Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at Rutgers NJMS. I am a scholar of the Hispanic Center of
Excellence (HCOE) and continue to pursue opportunities to empower and advance leadership qualities in
both medical professionals as well as adolescent and young adult community populations. I am currently a
member of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Group on Diversity and Inclusion, and I
served as Associate Director of Cultural Competency Programs at Rutgers NJMS for ten years. As a
clinical educator involved in numerous patient-targeted healthcare programs, I provide training and
assistance relating to the delivery of patient-centered, culturally sensitive care to diverse populations. My
research interests center heavily on efforts to eliminate health disparities in underserved communities
such as the Hispanic or Latino populations. I have been the principal investigator on multiple grants that
target the adolescent and young adult population addressing substance use/abuse, domestic violence,
sexual health, and HIV care in youths. I have also participated in numerous studies investigating potential
causes, screening tools, and intervention methods to address health disparities among minority
populations.

Division of Adolescent & Young Adult Medicine???s (DAYAM)
The DAYAM, a Division of the Department of Pediatrics of Rutgers-NJMS, has provided comprehensive
medical and psychosocial services to adolescents and young adults in specialized programs, ambulatory
clinics, and inpatient services at University Hospital and NJMS.
DAYAM is organized into 2 clinical services and 4 inter-related research/service/educational programs
funded by the institution, and state/federal agencies. Our current services include: Clinical Programs:
University Hospital Pediatrics- DAYAM-Ambulatory Care Services. DAYAM has Title X funding for family
planning services under the Preventing Risk and Developing Empowerment (PRiDE) Program. This
program provides youth with trauma informed, culturally competent, and inclusive sexual and reproductive
health education and related medical services (Trans Health specific services, family planning,
contraception management, STI testing and treatment). This program continues to enhance our
preconception counseling, addressing the gap among women of reproductive age living with HIV/AIDS. It
ensures assistance with the achievement or avoidance of pregnancy as desired by the client. Also, it
facilitates STI testing and treatment adherence to decrease transmission of STI's as well as access to
PrEP to decrease transmission of HIV, promoting the birth of a healthy HIV negative baby.
Community Service Programs: STOP (Spend Time On Prevention) - Youth oriented mobile Counseling
and Testing Program; START (Screening, Treatment, And Risk Reduction for Teens) - Primary Medical
Care, Mental Health, Medical Case Management, as well as re-engagement/retention of HIV infected
youth, MYLESTONE(Millennial Youth Learning Empowerment Skills Through Ongoing Needed Education)
- Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) counseling and empowerment through positive youth development
initiatives focusing on high risk negative youth; MSSP (Male Student Support Program) - Positive youth
development interventions to empower at risk middle school boys to graduate and avoid incarceration.
Physicians and staff share their expertise in caring for all youth. The focus remains on youth living with
HIV/AIDS, and minority and LGBTQ youth. Knowledge and skills are disseminated by engaging residents,
medical students and the community through education and community based research opportunities.
