Overview

Dr. Joanelle A. Bailey is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and an attending surgeon at University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. She serves as the Pediatric Trauma Medical Director for the Eric Mu??oz Trauma Center, where she is involved in the clinical care of injured patients as well as trauma program leadership, performance improvement, and trauma system development.

Dr. Bailey earned her medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University and completed her general surgery residency at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. During residency she completed a Master of Public Health at the Rutgers School of Public Health and served as a National Institutes of Health (NIH) T32 research fellow studying traumatic brain injury and the physiologic effects of chronic stress. She subsequently completed fellowship training in surgical critical care and acute care surgery at the University of Pennsylvania.

Her academic work focuses on the intersection of trauma care, health equity, and public health. Her research examines the impact of structural and social drivers of health on trauma outcomes, including firearm injury, urban violence, and disparities in trauma care systems. She has also conducted work in disaster preparedness and prehospital trauma care, with the goal of improving systems of care for injured patients.

Dr. Bailey is active in several national surgical organizations including the American College of Surgeons, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Society of Black Academic Surgeons, the National Medical Assocation, and the Association for Academic Surgery. She serves on national committees focused on disaster preparedness, academic advancement, and violence prevention.

In addition to her clinical and research activities, Dr. Bailey is committed to medical education and mentorship of medical students and surgical trainees. Her work integrates clinical excellence, trauma systems leadership, and research aimed at improving outcomes for injured patients and advancing equitable trauma care.
