Maha Abdellatif Generally, we are interested in the molecular mechanisms that underlie cardiac hypertrophy and failure. One of the major mechanisms involved in the development of heart disease is dysregulation of gene expression at the transcriptional, posttranscriptional, or translational level, which is the focus of our research. Specifically, our interest is in deciphering the histone code that regulates transcriptional activity and its modulation by the type of diet during cardiac hypertrophy and failure. Sylvia Christakos The object of research in my lab is to obtain a better understanding of the actions of vitamin D, a principal factor required for the development and maintenance of bone and for the maintenance of calcium homeostasis. It combines studies related to an understanding of the functional significance of vitamin D target proteins with studies related to the molecular mechanism of action of the active form of vitamin D, 1,25(OH)2D3. Studies are focused on the mechanisms by which vitamin D mediates its biological effects and how aberrant regulation may be involved in diseases such as osteoporosis.Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics

Hieronim Jakubowski I discovered an error-correcting mechanism in protein biosynthesis, which prevents access of the non-protein amino acid homocysteine (Hcy) to the genetic code and is responsible for the biological synthesis of the chemically reactive thioester Hcy-thiolactone in humans. This discovery led to a fruitful avenue of ongoing research on the origin of the genetic code, epigenetic regulation of gene expression, mTOR signaling, mechanisms of Hcy incorporation into protein, and the role of Hcy-thiolactone and Hcy-containing proteins in cardiovascular and neurological diseases, including Alzheimer's.Department of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics

George Yap Historically, our laboratory studied the role of cytokines in driving differentiation and function of effector T cells and investigates the intracellular mechanisms of resistance to Toxoplasma gondii parasites. More recently, we have turned our efforts into understanding the relationship between host cell tropism, the immune response and the ability of the host to tolerate disease and establish homeostasis. We have recently proposed the concept that pathogens express specific "a-virulence" determinants that engage host disease tolerance pathways.Department of Medicine
